the love fleas

So with my other hat on - that is to say, the hoarder of things curious and obscure (and possibly useless?) hat, here's a little something that I posted off today to a customer in Spain .....

'The Great Create'

On the 7th October at the Barn in Mells, myself and 7 other workshop tutors will be taking part in 'The Great Create', a charity fundraising event organised by Millie Moon Haberdashery.  All proceeds from ticket sales go to P.A.C (Positive Action on Cancer).
It should be a messy, sweaty, sticky fun day involving speed crafting, cakes, tea, guest speakers and a jelly roll race (look it up, it sounds insane!)

Please check out the links below for more info and pics of what to expect. Even better, buy a ticket and come along, I can absolutely one hundred percent guarantee that it will be an experience!

Somerset Arts Weeks

It's that exciting time of year again when you get to have a peek into artists' studios and workshops! I'm relieved to not be doing it this year so I have lots of time to go and be a punter! The favourite so far has been a little poke around Emma Scott's studio in Coleford, where there are also 3 other venues so well worth making the trip out there. Emma produces fantastic paintings and I love her sculptures/puppets too.

Porcelain spoon-organic series:stone, stick, bone, shell-ceramic wall art, serving spoon

A new series of spoons inspired by found natural treasures which I have held on to. I'm using Glacier white porcelain, white fires up beautifully and accented the bowls of the spoons with some transparent glaze. Textured and twisted, the series includes and exploits the cracks and quirks of porcelain. More to come...!

Now in my etsy shop:

New Etsy shop!

I've been a bit distracted lately-I've been indulging my other passion of vintage treasures and decided to open another Etsy shop where I can showcase my finds. It helps to keep the old man happy...and keeps it out of the house!

It's called 'the love fleas'- I wanted to call it 'les puces d'amour' after those tiny little dolls that were popular when I was a kid...which in themselves would now be considered vintage. Did you know that according to Etsy anything pre 1993 is considered vintage!! This means that half of my life is now consists of vintage memories....

Anyway. here's a link to the shop. I know this blog is primarily about ceramics but go on...take a peak, you might see something you remember from your childhood- it will either make you feel very happy or very old!

10 green bottles?

Well, nearly....I was going to make them, but the lure of the turquoise underglaze was too strong. So here we have 6 blue bottles....but please forgive the repeats of what seems to be the same image. I wanted to put together in one place all of the images which I had variously cropped and adjusted.

I'm hoping to bring this project full circle: these latest ceramic pieces were inspired by studies of Dutch still life paintings, I know I've moved far away from the original source with these bottles but I wouldn't have done them otherwise. I want to paint them now on very small canvases. I'm a useless painter, but it's something I really want to try, and also like the idea of returning 3d objects to 2d images, reversing what originally started as bringing 2d still life studies into a 3d format with my ceramics.

If the finished canvases aren't too awful they'll be appearing here soon!

Spring blossom and turquoise

Well, you can see the obsession with turquoise underglaze hasn't waned yet! Here's some new work-another little still life grouping.

Deep Bowl

Ring Bowl

Tripot

They are going up in my Etsy shop so please hop over there to read a description of how they are made. I think I might need to get some more underglaze soon....working on 10 green (or is it turquoise?) bottles at the moment...!

Queenie!

So, I'm sat in front of the computer with my two year old on my lap in a post lunch stupor, having watched Jack and Jilll on the computer for about the 14th time. Then my fingers start to wander and before you know it - I've created my own little homage to some artistic masters via the very in mode Queen Lizzie!

Not many washing lines looking like this today....

Would you like to see them....my version and the masters side by side...ahem...which one is which?

Vermeer 'Girl with a Pearl Earring'

Frans Hals 'Laughing Cavalier'

Warhol 'Raging Queens'

An attempt at a nod to Picasso's Blue period!

And finally, Manet 'The Lecture'

Well that was the last three hours of my life gone...hope you like the result! They'll be up in my shop/studio window tomorrow.

Happy Jubilee weekend folks!

Creamer set- still life

A little trio of pieces: Coffee cup, Creamer and Sugar lump pot. Everyday objects isolated to become sculptural studies.

Two Cups Still Life

Two Cups and Bowl...some more of my stoneware studies inspired by Dutch still life paintings. Not necessary functional...but who wants useful! Stained with homemade porcelain slip coloured with underglazes...forms delineated with black brush stroke.
